Schaab Metal Products, Incorporated

Schaab Metal Products, Incorporated is a wholesale distributor of light gauge sheet metal used in the construction industry. And also carries a variety of finished goods consisting of gutters, registers, pipe, fittings, and ventilation products for new home and light to medium commercial HVAC installations. The company currently serves contractors in a seventy mile radius of Fort Wayne utilizing four delivery trucks. The business also has a shop that can produce many items that are not normally stocked in the area.

Although the business was incorporated in 1985, it has a long history in the Fort Wayne area. The company was founded as Schaab Roofing & Supply in Monroeville, Indiana, circa 1907 by John A. Schaab, his son Alfred E. Schaab, and son-in-law J. Claude Weirman. Ownership today consists of descendants, in-laws, and key employees. Originally the business specialized in roofing and gutter sales as well as light manufacturing.

After the company moved to its current downtown Fort Wayne location in 1913, they began to add other product lines to their offerings, among these were; furnaces (which were later dropped), pipe, registers, and related accessories. To facilitate the growing inventory, the business had to increase its warehouse space from 15,000 square feet to over 55,000 square feet. This was accomplished through acquisition of neighboring buildings and the construction of two steel buildings as well as the use of every “nook and cranny” available.

Over the years, the business and its buildings, have survived numerous floods, several name changes, a fire in 1947, and a large increase in competitors. While nobody can predict the future, it is evident that Schaab Metal Products, Incorporated will be there.
